Medical Acupuncture & Dry Needling
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. It is believed to stimulate and balance the flow of energy, known as Qi (pronounced “chee”), within the body.
According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the human body has a network of meridians or pathways through which Qi flows. These meridians are associated with specific organs and functions in the body. When the flow of Qi is disrupted or imbalanced, it is believed to cause various health issues.
During an acupuncture session, thin needles are inserted into specific points along the meridians. The needles are usually made of stainless steel and are sterile and disposable to ensure safety. The insertion of the needles is typically painless or causes minimal discomfort.
The needles are then manipulated by the practitioner, often with gentle twirling or stimulation, to promote the flow of Qi and restore balance in the body. The needles are usually left in place for around 15 to 30 minutes while the person relaxes.
Acupuncture is possibly most well known for helping people to quit smoking but it is also commonly used to address a wide range of conditions, including:
- Pain management (such as headaches, back pain, and arthritis)
- Anxiety
- Bells Palsy
- Insomnia
- Fertility
- Stress reduction
- Digestive disorders (such as IBS, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Gastritis etc.)
- Allergies
- Respiratory conditions
- Vertigo
- and many many more…
While the practice of acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, it has gained recognition and popularity in many parts of the world. Scientific studies have been conducted to explore its effects and mechanisms, and acupuncture is increasingly integrated into mainstream healthcare systems.
Dry needling originates in Western medicine practices, particularly in the field of physical therapy and musculoskeletal medicine, and is a more recent technique compared to acupuncture. It is primarily based on the understanding of neuroanatomy and the physiology of muscles and trigger points. It focuses on releasing myofascial trigger points, which are localized knots or bands of tight muscles that can cause pain and dysfunction.
Dry needling involves the insertion of needles into trigger points or tight muscle bands to elicit a local twitch response. The twitch response helps release the tension in the muscle and reduce pain and discomfort. It is primarily used for musculoskeletal issues, such as chronic pain, sports injuries, and muscle tightness. It is often used as a technique within physical therapy or alongside other rehabilitative approaches.
Dry Needling can be used to address a number of musculoskeletal conditions and symptoms such as:
- Myofascial Pain Syndrome
- Muscle Strains and Sprains
- Tension Headaches and Migraines
- Neck and Back Pain
- Sports Injuries
- Joint Conditions
- Fybromyalgia

6 Week Quit Smoking Package
Acupuncture has been used as a complementary therapy to aid in smoking cessation for many years. There are several ways in which acupuncture helps individuals quit smoking:
Reduction of cravings: Acupuncture helps to reduce cravings for nicotine by stimulating the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving and mood-enhancing chemicals in the body. Alleviating the physical and psychological dependence on nicotine.
Stress and anxiety management: Acupuncture is known to have a calming and relaxing effect on the body. This helps to reduce stress, anxiety, and withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking. By promoting a sense of well-being and relaxation, acupuncture supports individuals during the challenging process of smoking cessation.
Support for withdrawal symptoms: Quitting smoking often leads to various withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, restlessness, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. Acupuncture helps to alleviate these symptoms by balancing the body’s energy and promoting the overall well-being.
Detoxification: Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural detoxification processes and helps to improve circulation, enhance organ function, and facilitate the elimination of toxins accumulated from smoking.
When undergoing acupuncture for smoking cessation, a practitioner will typically target specific acupuncture points related to addiction, stress, and withdrawal symptoms. These points may include those located on the ear, as auricular acupuncture is commonly used for smoking cessation.
