What is Sports / Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep Tissue Massage and Sports Massage are a form of massage where the musculoskeletal system (muscles, tendons and ligaments) is manipulated, with the aim of efficiency. This form of massage is designed to prevent injury, aid recovery and to enhance performance as well as correcting problems and/or imbalances in soft tissue. Along with these physical benefits, sports/Deep Tissue massage is also proven to assist individuals mentally, whether in preparation for their next activity or to aid in mental recovery after injury or trauma.

Who can benefit from sports / Deep Tissue massage?

In short, everyone can benefit from sports / deep tissue massage. The word “activity” isn’t reserved solely for professional athletes. Anyone who participates in any form of regular activity would benefit from Sports Massage. Whether you are training for an upcoming competition, regularly play sport, attend the gym or even work a manual job, Sports Massage would benefit you greatly. Likewise, if you have suffered an injury or have a specific issue with a particular muscle group and wish to aid in recovery or are just looking to prevent injury, Sports Massage is right for you.

The 3 types of sports massage:

Maintenance Massage: A vital tool that increases flexibility and boosts nutrient delivery to muscles, Maintenance Massage is used both post training/activity and between events. A Maintenance Massage keeps the body relaxed, reduces inflammation and moves waste products from soft tissue, which aids in recovery and improves performance. This type of massage also allows therapists to prevent injury by identifying and treating potential injury risks before they become a problem.

Pre-Event/Post Event: A type of massage that is highly effective either on the run up to or after an event, which allows individuals to return to training, activity and competitions much more quickly. Taking place with before or after an event and are much more specific than Maintenance Massages, these types of massage mitigate the risk of future injury drastically. Pre-Event Massage can be utilised alongside the warm up, to relax the muscles, increase circulation and ease mental tension. Post-Event Massage, given after an event is utilised to enhance recovery by reducing metabolic build up and reducing muscle spasm.

Rehabilitation Massage: Used to treat acute and chronic injuries, Rehabilitation Massage is utilised following injury to aid in the rehabilitation process, reducing healing time and discomfort. This type of massage uses specific techniques that stimulate recovery, removes scar tissue and reduces pain. This type of massage is critical to recovery and will see a return to normality much more effectively and efficiently than individuals who to not partake in Rehabilitation Massage.
